Walter Mitty, een dagdromende boekhouder met een overbezorgde moeder, ziet zichzelf graag als een held die grote avonturen beleeft. Zijn droom wordt waarheid als hij per ongeluk een mysterieuze vrouw ontmoet die hem een klein zwart boekje overhandigt. Volgens haar bevat het boekje de locatie van de Nederlandse kroonjuwelen die verstopt zijn sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Binnen de kortste keren bevindt Mitty zich midden in een ingewikkelde samenzwering en hij moet toegeven, dat het toch niet zo makkelijk is om een held te zijn in het echt.
