De Litouwse Karin wordt na de Tweede Wereldoorlog opgesloten in een gevangenis in Italië. Haar enige mogelijkheid om daaruit te komen, is te trouwen met de Italiaanse soldaat Antonio, die verliefd op haar is. Antonio woont echter op het eiland Stromboli, waar Karin zich maar moeilijk kan aanpassen. Ze voelt zich eenzaam door een taalprobleem, en bovendien voortdurend bedreigd door de vulkaan op het eiland.
